Marriage Tribunal & Pastoral Education

Understanding Catholic marriage and the tribunal.

An ecclesiastical marriage tribunal examines certain questions concerning the validity of a marriage under canon law. It does not simply grant a church divorce: a declaration of nullity concerns whether a valid marriage bond arose at the time of consent. Engaged couples may also need sound preparation before marriage, while married and separated Catholics may need pastoral guidance.

A voice from the tribunal

Rev. Fr. Michael C. Chime, JCD

Fr. Chime's published biography identifies him as a priest and the President of the Interdiocesan Marriage Tribunal, Enugu, with approximately two decades of tribunal service. His work focuses on the validity of matrimonial consent, preparation for marriage and the pastoral care of families.

Important distinction: Reading an article, completing an online exercise or contacting an author does not open a tribunal case or determine anyone's sacramental status. For a personal marriage case or a petition for nullity, speak privately with your parish priest or the competent diocesan tribunal. Avoid disclosing sensitive case details through the general form below.
